Can I spend less on a wedding gift if it’s a destination wedding?

You’re wedding is where??? Sure, everyone wants to take a nice vacation, but it’s not always easy when it’s on the happy couple’s terms. While destination weddings make for nice pictures, they can come with a high price tag. So after you’re done dropping cash on plane tickets and hotel rooms, is it ok to spend a little less on the the present?

I think you can definitely spend less! But if it were one of my best friends, I would probably still spend the same amount. And it’s fun to use destination weddings as an excuse for a vacation if you can!

I feel like you should spend the same amount because you are still choosing to attend the wedding. You always have the option to not attend if you don’t like the destination unless it’s a close friend. But would you really want to lower your gift amount for a close friend.

I feel like it’s asking a lot to except friends to pay hundreds or potentially over a thousand dollars to travel to your wedding and then expect a large gift (over $70). On the other hand, I also think it’s rude to not invite people to your exotic destination wedding, then organize a separate wedding reception at which you ask people to make your wedding cake (and give them a recipe). What’s up with that one?

I think I’d end up spending a shade less than usual, but only by barely. I think when I buy the gift I’m not thinking as much about the amount I spent on all the other pieces.

I’m torn on this question. I’d say spend the same amount because the person just gave you an excuse to fly to Fiji or wherever. On the other hand, by spending a little less you could enjoy a few more drinks on the beach/mountain/pagoda depending on where the destination is.
